Water Smart landscape Design…
Designing a landscape in the Las Vegas area requires the right plant pallet and making water smart decisions… I have designed everything from The forum shops on the strip to your everyday backyard and the same rules apply… The first thing you want to look at is how the sun shines on the property… This will show you what plants need to go in what areas… Next you want to get the sq. ft. of the project area… Now we are ready to start a water smart design… It is easer than it seems… First you take half of your total sq. ft. and that is how much you will need to cover with plant material… A real easy way to do this is by going to the Southern Nevada Water Authority web-site… They have a plant pallet that will tell you how much sq. ft. you will get out of each plant… From here it is time to pick out your plant material… Since we already know where the sun will be in the yard you can place plants that can handle full sun light where they go and plants that need shade can go where they go… Once you have picked out your plant pallet that adds up to the right sq. ft. it is time to plant… Always use a drip system with a timer to save water and make sure you have a watering schedule for where you live… These are rules that I use for my landscape design and I have yet to have negative feed back on my designs… And of course the easiest and best way to get a water smart design would be to hire a Water Smart Contractor…

Is it true that the city will give you money to convert your landscape in to a water smart landscape?

Yes right now in the Las Vegas valley the Southern Nevada Water Authority will rebate customers $2 per square foot of grass removed and replaced with xeriscape for the first 1,500 square feet. The rebate for the conversion of grass in excess of 1,500 square feet is $1 per square foot.
