Be Smart….

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

Palms and trees get a lot bigger than most people think… I see this happen over and over… I will see a new home go in with a brand new landscape that looks GREAT right now but is doomed to be replaced… So many times I see someone buy a small palm that is only 1′ to 4′ tall and they look great where they are placed… But they did not take the time to see how big that palm is going to get… The next thing you know it grows into your wall because you planted to close and it tripled in size… Or it grew into another tree… The list goes on and on… Do your self a favor and check to see just how big that palm or tree will get when it is mature… It is a simple task that can save you tons of time and money….

Artificial Turf

Monday, June 25th, 2007

Artificial Turf is not what you think it is… There are way to many draw backs to it… The biggest one is the warranty… If the company you bought your turf from is less then a year old like most are how can you trust a 8 year warranty… There are not many company’s that have been around as long as there warranty… That makes it scary… Plus if you live in the Las Vegas area it is hot… Lets say it is 110 out and you have fake grass…. Well it is made out of little rubber balls that are going to heat up to 120… Now not only can you not walk or play on it but it will smell like burning rubber… So it is defiantly not kid friendly… And it is not made for animals at all… It is very hard to clean… There are a couple jobs that i have seen that look okay but for most of the jobs around town they look fake… You can see seams and it fades….

Fake grass

If you want grass then get grass… It will cost you about $0.50 a sq. ft. to get it going… For fake grass you are looking at $8.00 a sq. ft… A good replacement is a plant called myoporum… It is a ground cover that looks like grass and is very hardy… Plant it on 3′ centers and it will cover the area with a green ground cover…. So now not only are you saving on your water bill but your new grass will flower about 5 times a year…

Tip Of The Day “Queen Palm”…

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

I have noticed that places like star nursery and moon valley will sell you anything… And they will tell you that it will look great… Yes but for how long…? I am not against these places but there are things that should not be sold in the Las Vegas Valley…. And the number one sold item that does not work here is the Queen palm….

Queen Palm

Yes they look GREAT when you plant it but they will die… It is not a maybe they just will… Vegas gets the worst of both seasons… We are way to hot for them to live in the summer and we freeze in the winter which will kill them too… A GREAT replacement palm is the Date palm they are a little more expensive but think of if it this way…. You can save a couple dollars with a good chance that you will need to replace it or you can just start with an awesome palm that will last… Just something to think about….
